Lima Senior stops Findlay

Lima Senior’s 68-63 boys basketball win over Findlay on Saturday night was a close game decided by close-in shots in the end.

The Spartans (8-8, 3-5 Three Rivers Athletic Conference) pulled away from the Trojans in the fourth quarter with a barrage of lay-ups and point-blank range shots.

Probably not coincidently this attack on the basket happened after Findlay’s 6-foot, 5-inch post player Isaac Schumm was called for his fifth foul with 5:59 left in the game.

Lima Senior led 43-41 when Schumm fouled out. Its eight field goals after that were three drives to the hoop for scores by Bryan Miller, two inside hoops by Jaleel King, two more from Jaleel Long and an inside bucket by Jatsiel Colon.

The Spartans led by eight points, 63-55, with 1:27 to play. Findlay got to within three points, 66-63 with 11 seconds to play but could not get any closer.

Miller led Lima Senior with 21 points and Jermaine Daniel scored 11. Jatsiel Colon had 9 points and 8 rebounds and King had 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Ryan Nunn’s 22 points led Findlay (8-7, 3-5 TRAC). Ryan Roth scored 13 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter, and Jacob Logsdon had 12 points, all of them on 3-pointers. Logsdon, Roth and Nunn combined for nine 3-pointers.

Lima Senior built a 32-25 halftime lead and half the Spartans’ first-half points came in two runs.

They opened the game with a 7-0 run but saw that advantage disappear. Then, with Findlay leading 25-23 after a 3-pointer by Roth, they ended the first half on a 9-0 run in the final three minutes of the second quarter.

There were seven lead changes in the first half. Lima Senior’s biggest lead was seven in the opening minutes of the game. Findlay’s biggest edge was four points late in the first quarter.

Lima Senior struggled with turnovers early, committing 11 of them in the first half. Findlay struggled with its shooting in the first half when it connected on only 11 of 31 field goal attempts (36 percent) and its starters were 8 of 26.

For the game, Lima Senior shot 53 percent (25 of 47). Findlay was 24 of 54 for 44 percent. Lima Senior had a 28-19 rebounding edge. The Spartans had 17 turnovers and forced 14 of them by Findlay.
