Bethany Pellman and Chandler Stevens took different routes but each ended up on the championship podium on Sunday afternoon at 20th Century Lanes in Lima.
The two repeated as champions of one of the more coveted titles in northwest Ohio, the Lima City Singles Classic.
Pellman entered match play as the top seed from three rounds of qualifying while Stevens had to battle back from near elimination through his qualifying rounds. The roles reversed on Sunday when Stevens moved to the top seed after match game play and Pellman had to battle back beginning the stepladder play in the initial seeded match.
Pellman rolled against Sarah Moore in a match that was filled with players battling the pins and battling back from tough shots. Pellman through one more clutch shot than Moore and took the first game 193-181.
Match two was an even tougher battle with Chris Mahlie. This match had a similar feel to it, a feeling of “Who would throw the last clutch shot?” Again in this case it was Pellman, who took the match 236-233.
The championship match with Donna Childs, the top seed following match play, appeared to be over early when Pellman strung together a group of strikes early. Childs battled back and it took yet another strong finish by the clutch Pellman to seal the championship deal.
Stevens lapped the field in the match play portion of the tourney on Sunday with an 1,860 total for the round of eight. Jordy Schroeder was second at that point with a 1,638, his father Randy was 3rd at 1620 and Anthony Kennard fourth at 1599.
The task for Kennard seemed to be to hold his opponents to the score of 214. He handled father and then son 257-214 and 248-214 to move on to compete against his former UNOH teammate Stevens.
Stevens would roll a 209 and stone cold nine pin and the Motiv train would stop the AK Train 209-199.
