Jettinghoff, Rader low qualifiers in women’s tourney

LIMA – The Lima Area Women’s Match Play golf tournament began Thursday at The Oaks Golf Club and the scores indicate a possible tournament for the record books.

Medal play was used to determine flights and brackets for match play which will begin this morning at Hidden Creek Golf Club.

With a number of current and recent former college players in the field, low scores were expected but this group of girl’s exceeded expectations.

Personal bests were fired by tournament medalist Abbey Jettinghoff (Delphos St. Johns/Tiffin) who fired a three under par 69, Rebekah Rader (Shawnee/UNOH) who shot two under 70, and Jennifer Mitchell (Shawnee/Urbana) who finished at even par 72.

The above trio will play in the championship flight along with Brianna Baird (UNOH) who shot 71, Morgan Barnett from UNOH who shot 73, Sandy Doan who fired 78, and Tessa Brouillette who finished with an 80.

“Everything was going right; it is my best ever score.” Jettinghoff, who now works for the City of Lima, said. “I made bogey on 16 and 18, so it could have been better; I had five birdies and some were six or seven footers, so I putted pretty well.”

Good things happen when you hit fairways and greens and that was the key to Rader’s round.

“I was able to hit fairways and greens and then two putt,” Rader said. “I had two birdies and an eagle on number 12 (430 yard par 5), I want to have fun in this tournament and just shot my best ever.”

Mitchell gave credit to her caddie (her father Rob Mitchell) for her best ever round.

“I hit it pretty good, I shot even par 72 and never did that before,” Mitchell said. “My dad caddied and gave me good lines and put a lot of confidence in me.”

The first flight will be composed of Carol Mitchell (83), Connie Shutt (84), Charlotte Schaub (86), Kris Stevely (87), Brenda Schimmoeller (87), and Brenda Kattman who shot 90 and took an USGA tie-breaker over Jennifer Mefferd (90) to take the final spot in the first flight.

The second is made up of Mefferd, Becky Komminsk (91), Deb Osburn (91), Evie Lenski (91), Kelli Marsh (92), Amy Newland (93), and Karen Fisher (96).

The tournament now turns to match play beginning with the second flight teeing off at 9 a. m. this morning at Hidden Creek followed by the first flight and then the championship flight.

Each of the three flights consists of seven players and the low qualifier in each flight will receive a first round bye.

Championship flight matches include number two seed Rader versus number seven Brouillette, number three seed Baird versus number six Doan, and number four seed Mitchell versus number five seed Barnett.

The tournament also includes a junior flight for the first time ever. While there are only two golfers entered, they will play Saturday at Colonial Golfers Club and Sunday at Shawnee Country Club. According to tournament officials, they wanted to go ahead with the junior flight so other younger golfers will know it is viable for the future.
