Locos fall 7-6 to Ironmen

LORAIN — The Lima Locos saw their 5-3 lead vanish as Lorain County scored four times in the bottom of the sixth and then hung on for a 7-6 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League victory Saturday night.

The Locos appeared on the verge of at least tieing the game in the top of the ninth when they scored a run and had the bases loaded with one out. Pat Carlozzi then came in and secured the final two outs without allowing a run to earn a save.

Garrett Hodges (Kennesaw State) had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI, Stephen Dobbs (Alabama Birmingham) had two hits and an RBI, Ethan Hurt (Trevecca Nazarene) had two hits and JT Thomas (Mercer) and Jared Nixon (Alabama Birmingham) each had a hit and an RBI for Lima (1-1).

The Locos will next play host to the Ironmen at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Simmons Field.

Tawa Run Classic

OTTAWA — The Fighting 63rd fell 8-5 to Ashland Post 88 and 17-14 to Piqua Post 184 before defeating Chillicothe Post 62 in the Tawa Run Classic.

Against Ashland, Ryan Gossard had a single, a double and an RBI, Austin Horstman had two hits and an RBI, Josiah Shoemaker and Kaden Sullivan each doubled and had an RBI and Corbin Niese had a base hit and an RBI for Ottawa.

Against Piqua, Corbin Niese had four hits, including a pair of doubles, and an RBI, Cole Niese had four hits, including a triple, and four RBI, Gossard had three hits and three RBI, Ryan McCracken had two hits and three RBI and Sullivan doubled and had two RBI.

Against Chillicothe, Sullivan had two hits, including a homer run, and an RBI, Shoemaker had two hits, including a double, and an RBI, Austin Horstman had two hits and two RBI, Grant Fuerst had two hits and an RBI, Ryan McCracken had a hit and three RBI, Nathan Arrington had a hit and two RBI, Derek Buss had a hit and an RBI, Matthew Bowden had two hits, Cole Niese tripled and had an RBI and Noah Howell had a hit and two RBI. Ottawa finished the round robin portion of the Classic 2-2.

Duo set marks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ohio Northern’s Emily Richards set a new Division III record in the 800-meter run and Matt Molinaro set a new school record in the 800-meter run Saturday afternoon at the Music City Distance Carnival.

Richards broke her own record by nearly two seconds as she finished third overall in the event in 2:00.62.

She also automatically qualified for the United States Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, California.

Molinaro broke former Polar Bear standout and national champion Jimmy O’Brien’s school mark by nearly a second with a time of 1:47.73.
