Ohio high school divisional assignments announced for basketball, wrestling

COLUMBUS — Following the division moves in football, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced its new divisional assignments for the 2017-18 winter sports of basketball and wrestling.

Like football, this is the the first time, Competitive Balance roster data was used in determining divisional assignments in basketball, which is the only OHSAA winter sport affected by the Competitive Balance regulation that OHSAA member schools adopted by referendum vote in 2014.

A handful in both boys and girls basketball saw changes in their status.

In Division III boys hoops, Ottawa-Glandorf and Indian Lake went down from Division II to Division III and Fort Recovery moved up to Division III from Division IV.

Allen East and Marion Local both moved down from Division III to Division IV.

Except for O-G, all area high schools that were Division II last year will remain in Division II.

For the girls, O-G moved from D-II to D-III, Crestview, Lima Central Catholic, Perry and Spencerville went from Division IV to Division III and Bluffton, Columbus Grove, Delphos Jefferson and Fort Recovery went from D-III to D-IV

For wrestling, the divisions will be based on enrollment. For dual team wrestling the OHSAA breaks it down to Division I – 362 and more boys; Division II – 210 to 361 boys; and Division III – 209 and fewer boys

For individual wrestling, the OHSAA has broken it down to Division I – 370 and more boys; Division II – 200 to 369 boys; and Division III – 199 and fewer boys.

According to the OHSAA the divisional breakdowns in wrestling and basketball were approved by the Board of Directors June 1 during their June meeting. Additional divisional breakdowns for the 2017-18 winter sports of swimming and bowling will be announced in August.

Division assignments are based on gender-specific enrollment numbers provided to the OHSAA by the Ohio Department of Education. Enrollment figures are then modified in the sports football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball and baseball based on Competitive Balance roster data submitted by each school.
