Perry baseball wins season opener

PERRY TOWNSHIP –Bad weather and an extended tournament run by its boys basketball team delayed the start of Perry’s baseball season until Monday night.

It was well worth the wait for the Commodores when they bested visiting Ottoville 6-1 in game that was shortened to 5 1/2 innings when a steady rain made the field unplayable.

“We were able to squeeze a game in.” Perry coach Mark Hoersten said. “It was the first time we were able to play somebody else.”

Perry started right hander Austin Money on the mound and limited him to 29 pitches, which allowed him to get through 1 1/3 innings before being relieved by left-hander Logan Liles, who would go on to record the win for the Commodores.

The new Ohio High School Athletic Association rule that limits the number of pitches a player can throw came into play as Hoersten plans to use Money in a league game today. The OHSAA rule states that if a player throws more than 30 pitches in a game he cannot throw the next day.

Ottoville starter Nick Moorman allowed only one runner through the first three innings and struck out the side in both the first and third innings.

But then the drizzle came and Moorman ran into problems in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two walks, an error, and two singles off the bats of Money and Louie Hoersten allowed the Commodores to plate four runs and take solid control of the game.

Liles, meanwhile, was solid in relief and sailed through the fourth and fifth innings after he escaped a bases loaded jam in the third inning. Liles recorded six strikeouts in the contest.

Perry added a run in the fifth when Money and Dylan Maxwell connected on back to back doubles to make the score 5-0.

With the drizzle becoming more of a steady rain the Big Green (0-3) scored their lone run in the top of the sixth inning thanks to back to back followed by two wild pitches.

The Commodores were able to throw both Luke Floyd and Louie Hoersten in that sixth inning to give four pitchers mound time in their opener.

Perry loaded the bases on three walks and a single by Keaton Miller drove in the sixth Commodores run in the bottom of the sixth before the umpires made the decision to halt play for the night.

Floyd paced the Perry offense with two hits in the game while Liles recorded the win for the Commodores and Moorman suffered the loss for the Big Green.

“I got to see some pitchers work and Liles came in and threw strikes,” Mark Hoersten said. “We need to work on our hitting but it is early in the season.”
