New LCC coach

Katie Krieg has resigned her position as the Lima Central Catholic girl’s basketball head coach and Ron Williams, past athletic director and longtime assistant boys coach, will assume the position it was announced Friday.

Krieg, who coached the Thunderbirds for the past six years, posted a 75-65 record at LCC. This past year, Krieg guided the Thunderbirds to a 12-12 mark.

For Williams, the move to coach the girls’ team, sort of fell in his lap. Approximately two weeks ago, he met with Krieg about the possibility of helping coach the girls team as an assistant because his daughter, Rosie, is on the team, and he wanted to offer his experience.

A week later, Krieg met with LCC athletic director Frank Kill about stepping down as the head coach of the team due to family reasons.

Kill then met with Williams and asked him if he would accept the position of head coach and Williams accepted.

“It was one of those things that I don’t know if I would have asked to be an assistant if it wasn’t for my daughter,” Williams said. “She was the main reason I wanted to switch from boys to girls and things just opened up the way they did.”

Williams, who has coached girls at the middle school level, looks forward to the challenge and has the advantage of knowing the players he will be coaching.Williams was a member of the coaching staff of the teams that won state championships under Bob Seggerson and Kill at LCC.

“I have coached a lot of these girls when they were younger and I have been around them for years,” Williams said.
