Wapakoneta boys ranked in the top 10

Wapakoneta, sporting a 16-1 mark, has jumped into the top 10 in the Division II Associated Press boys basketball poll released Monday.

The Redskins, currently riding a 12-game winning streak, was ranked No. 9 in Division II. Western Buckeye League rivals Ottawa-Glandorf remained at No. 7. The two teams will square off Feb. 11.

In Division III, Versailles is ranked No. 4 and Wayne Trace is right behind them at No. 5.

Fort Loramie dropped one spot to No. 7 in Division IV.

Girls basketball

Perry 44, Cory-Rawson 35

Cory-Rawson jumped out to an 11-2 lead after one period but Perry rallied to cut the lead to 19-14 by halftime. In the second half the Commodores outscored Cory-Rawson 30-17 to secure the victory.

Perry’s Kyazia Healey scored 19 points to lead Perry.

Perry improves to 2-16 and Cory-Rawson falls to 0-18.

COLLEGE

Men’s Basketball

Bluffton University 77, Franklin College 64

Bluffton’s Austin Rohde hit four 3-pointers to net a game-high 30 points to lead the Beavers to a 77-64 win over Franklin College. Kevin Christie added 15 points and Jared Wentling grabbed 1o rebounds.

Bluffton improves to 11-8 overall and 4-8 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletice Conference. Franklin College falls to 6-13 and 3-9 in the HCAC.

Richards honored

ADA — Junior Emily Richards (Delaware/Hayes) has been named the Women’s Indoor Ohio Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 23-28.

The junior led the Polar Bears (16-6 overall) at Grand Valley State (Mich.) Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Richards broke a school record for the second consecutive week as she broke her own school record in the 800-meter run and won the race in 2:09.46.

Her time in the event currently ranks first nationally and was the 10th fastest time in Division III history in the event.

Spencerville grad honored

ADA — Senior Lucas Shumate (Wapakoneta/Spencerville) garnered his first Men’s Indoor Ohio Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season for the week of Jan. 23-28.

Shumate led the men’s track & field team Saturday afternoon as they competed at the Grand Valley State (Mich.) Invitational.

The senior broke his own previous school record from 2015 in the weight throw with a toss of 59’ 5.00”.

His throw currently ranks fourth best in the nation.

Five Ohio State players will be signing autographs at the Lima Mall at 1 p.m. Saturday. The players at the session are Kato Mitchell, James Cotton, Thad Gibson, Marcus Hall and Donald Washington.
