Undefeated: Second half surge lifts Titans

OTTAWA – Ottawa-Glandorf’s Kadie Hempfling likes to get her teammates involved.

And she did that very well in the first half.

But the second half was her green light for her own offense.

Hempfling scored all 16 of her points in the second half to power the Titans to a 54-46 girls basketball victory over Perrysburg Tuesday at Hermiller Gymnasium.

Ottawa-Glandorf is 10-0, while Perrysburg is 6-3.

“It’s nice to get everyone involved,” Hempfling said. “That’s my mentality this year. I want to get everyone involved, then I’m last.”

It marked win No. 100 for Ottawa-Glandorf coach Troy Yant (100-18 in his fifth year).

Hempfling, last year’s Western Buckeye League player of the year, finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.

The Titans power forward Kylie White was her usual steady self at both ends. White had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Of her 13 boards, six came on the offensive end.

White also had many early baskets off passes from Hempfling, after her dribble drives attracted double-teams.

“Kylie and I work amazing together,” Hempfling said. “I love playing with Kylie.”

Lexi Schroeder added eight points and four rebounds for O-G.

“We talked all week about roles,” Yant said. “We’re trying to figure out how to make our team the best it can be. I think the recipe right now is we’re a much better team when she (Hempfling) gets other people involved early and she makes the passes she is capable of making and gives easy looks for other people. Then, she can get hers once the passing gets going. … And we were bringing kids off the bench and they stepped up against a quality opponent.”

The game was back-and-forth for three quarters until the Titans pulled away at the end.

Perrysburg led 23-19 at the half, while Hempfling had two fouls early in the second quarter.

At the half, Hempfling had five assists, but no points on only two shots.

Hempfling then scored six points in the third quarter and 10 in the final quarter.

The Titans used a 9-0 fourth-quarter run to pull out to a 47-40 lead with 4:53 to go.

White tied the game at 40 with a putback with 6:15 to go.

White’s two foul shots gave O-G the lead to stay 42-40 with 5:39 to go.

A Perrysburg turnover led to Hempfling’s fast-break layup to make it 44-40.

Hempfling then made a leaping, diving steal of an inbounds pass at halfcourt. She then ended up converting the steal into a fast-break layup.

That gave the Titans a 47-40 lead.

“Kylie was out with foul trouble and I knew we had to get some quick points,” Hempfling said. “I felt if I get a steal, everyone’s tempo gets going.”

Hempfling closed out the game by hitting 6 of 8 at the line in the final quarter.

Perrysburg guard Hailey Wenzelman scored 17 points. Kristina DeMarco scored nine.

O-G won the boards, 31-29.

O-G shot 44 percent from the field and was 2 of 13 on 3-pointers.

Perrysburg shot 36 percent from the field and was 1 of 14 on 3-pointers.

The Titans played more confident in their roles in the second half than in recent holiday games.

“We’re starting to figure out what each person likes to do,” Hempfling said. “I think we got each other in those roles tonight.”
