Locos shut down Lorain County 7-0; division lead grows

LORAIN — Winning starting pitcher Cas Silber (High Point) and relievers Austin Cox (Mercer), Stewart Tyler (Chattahoochee Valley) and Conner Davis (Creighton) combined to allow four hits and five walks to go with seven strikeouts in a 7-0 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League victory Friday night against Lorain County.

Silber allowed one hit and two walks while striking out five in a six-inning outing to improve his record to 3-1.

Jeremy Johnson (Auburn) had two hits, including a double, and two RBI, Matt Smithwick (Santa Clara) had two hits, Daino Deas II (Auburn) doubled with an RBI and Jared Nixon (Alabama Birmingham) doubled also for the Locos (18-7).

Lima scored the only run it would need in the top of first when Logan Quimuyog (James Madison) sacrificed in Nixon. The Locos then padded their advantage with five runs in the seventh and another in the ninth.

With Grand Lake’s 8-5 loss to Lake Erie, the Locos hold a 3 1/2 game lead atop the North Division. Lima returns home to Simmons Field for a 7:05 p.m. game today against Lake Erie.
