IT Fight series

comes to Lima

When Aaron Garrett got into mixed martial arts in 2005 he thought it would be fun and a way to get in shape. Now the 30-year-old fighter will competing in his final bout as part of the IT Fight Series 44 event at the Apex Sports Zone at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The all amateur event will feature 14 bouts with 28 fighters.

Garrett, who will face off against Tyree Johnson, said several injuries have plagued him that led to his retirement but he said it has been well worth the abuse it has taken on his body.

“I thought it could be fun. When I first started I weighed 318 pounds and by the time I was ready for my first fight I was 185 pounds,” said Garrett, who admitted that he never got into a fight in high school. “Even if you don’t fight it is a great way to get into shape.”

Garrett, who is also promoting the event, said even though it is his last fight, he did not want the focus to be on him, rather on the event itself because of the talent that will be competing.

Garrett added that the event will feature some of the best local fighters around.

In addition to Garrett’s final match, other matches of interest include a welterweight title contender fight between Gene Dunn against Tommy Metzger. Dunn is 2-1 and coming off a win over Avery Arellano at IT Fight Series 42 event back in April. Metzger is coming off a loss and is 3-1 overall.

Garrett said past fights in Lima have attracted more than 1,000 people and he about the same this year and added that the Apex Sports Zone is an ideal location.

“We have had it at all over the place like the fairgrounds and the VFW,” Garrett said. “We actually like places that have indoor soccer. It is a little smaller and a little more intimate.”
