Allen County Archers

The Allen County Archers, at the corner of state Route 117 and Defiance Trail, have a pair of monthly shoots planned. A traditional shoot is held the third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. An open shoot is the first Saturday and Sunday of every month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For details, call Neil Wallace at 567-825-7109.

ATHLETICS

Lima

The #DragonSpeed Clinic, hosted by Lima Senior Lady Spartans track and field team will be be at Spartan Stadium from 4:30-6:30 p.m. June 21-23.

The clinic is open to athletes of all sports (ages 13-18) that wish to improve their basic running/sprint mechanics. Gray Horn, 2014 United States champion and track coach at Tiffin University will be on hand for coaching tips.

The cost of the camp is $75 ($60 for Lima City school-athletes). Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

Payne

The Payne Ball Association will be playing host to two all-star tournaments the weekend of July 8-10 at the Payne Community Park.

A boys 8 & under coach-pitch baseball tournament will be played with teams guaranteed three games in the tournament.

Also, a girls 8 & under coach-pitch softball tournament will take place on those three days as well with all teams guaranteed to play three games.

BASEBALL

Bluffton

The Bluffton University baseball team will host a Youth Skills Camp from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on July 18 and July 19. The camp is open to youth ages 9-14. Cost is $78. Registration forms can be found at bluffton.edu/athletics/baseball. Participants will be coached by Bluffton University players and coaches. A low player-to-coach ratio will help youth develop skills suited for his/her age and skill level. Learning will be emphasized through drills designed to improve technique through a fun, competitive atmosphere. Players will need to bring a sack lunch, water bottle and all baseball equipment (helmet, glove, bat, catcher’s equipment, etc.)

BASKETBALL

Bluffton

The Bluffton University women’s basketball team will host a Skills Camp Monday, June 27-Thursday, June 30. The camp is open to girls entering grades 2-8. The first session will be for participants entering grades 2-4 and will take place from 9 a.m.-noon all four days. The second session will be for participants entering grades 5-8 and will take place from 1-4 p.m. each day. A Jamar Butler Basketball Camp takes place in July at Bluffton Family Recreation.The camp is July 16, at Bluffton Family Recreation. Grades 1-4 sessions are from 9 a.m. to noon. Grades 5-8 sessions are from 1-4 p.m. Butler is a former Lima Shawnee and Ohio State University basketball player. Cost for the camp is $50 and registration includes a t-shirt. The YMCA summer basketball league for first through fifth grade students is now forming. The second annual Legends of Northwest Ohio will be conducting a free football camp July 16 for area youth age 8-13. . Elida alumni and former NFL player Kyle Miller will be joined by NFL players Zac Dysert of the Miami Dolphins and Jarrod Pughsley of the Kansas City Chiefs to teach fundamentals, coach, encourage and inspire these young athletes. Convoy

The fifth annual Kory Lichtensteiger Football Camp will be held in Convoy from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25. This offensive focused camp is for athletes entering grades 9-12. The cost of the camp is $60 per athlete with a guaranteed T-shirt if registered before June 20.

Lichtensteiger is a graduate of Crestview High School and Bowling Green State University. He is now the starting center for the Washington Redskins. He returns to Northwest Ohio on June 25 to produce a Division I caliber camp accessible to a highly talented, yet under-recruited area.

The featured camp guest again this year will be Washington Redskins strength and agility coach, Chad Englehart. He brings with him secrets of the NFL Combine and a knowledge base for body development that will improve athletes’ performance at any level. He will emphasize football specific speed and strength training as well as drills that include the campers 40 time, Pro Shuttle, L Cone Drill, and best of all learn how to decrease your 40 time by .2 seconds.

The Midwest Buckeye Football Officials Association is offering classes to train and certify new high school football officials. Students will receive all rulebooks and officials’ manuals and have their dues paid to the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Students must pass the OHSAA official’s test as part of the class.

High school students 14 and older interested in officiating grade school football games may also enroll. Classes will meet from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesdays beginning July 13, and ending September 7. Classes will be conducted in Celina.

The Lima YMCA will be conducting a summer golf camp at the Oaks Golf Course on from 9:30 – 11 a.m. June 20-23. The camps is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 14 years old and they will learn course etiquette, terminology and the fundamentals of the game. Individuals must have golf clubs. The fee is $75 for YMCA members and $80 for non members.

The 73rd annual Lima Area Women’s Match Play Tournament is July 21-24. Starting times are 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with matches played at Lost Creek Golf Club, Hidden Creek Golf Club, Delphos Golf Club and Shawnee Country Club. You do not need a USGA handicap to participate, and organizers will try to fulfill pairing requests for the qualifying round. After qualifying, the tournament heads to match play this year. The Lima Sabres is hosting a Trap Shooting Sports program for youth from 4th grade to youth entering the junior year of high school. Junior Trap Shooting will run through July 21 at 5:30 p.m. each Thursday. The junior trap shooting is open to all youth in the Lima area; a parental consent form must be signed by the parent or guardian. Parents must be on site for the youth to participate. The targets, shells and firearm will all be supplied free of charge. There will be certified NRA Range Safety Officers, along with certified NRA Shotgun Coaching, and NRA certified Shotgun Instructor on staff to work with youth to instruct the youth in the Safety,

A makeup safety class will be held June 23 for those who could not attend the one June 16. The youth will be instructed for the first five weeks of the program to be become safe in the handing of the firearm with no score being kept. On the sixth week, 25 targets will put up for each youth in an Amature Trap Assoc. Format with a 5 person squad. All targets will be 16 yard targets (no Handicap targets). Score will be called for each youth, shoot off targets will available if required. While the scores are being tabulated the youth and families will be able to enjoy a pizza party. Awards will be presented to the top scores in each age group. The Youth trap shooting event is sponsored by Lima Sabres, Friends of the NRA, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Safari Club International. SOFTBALL

Bluffton

The Bluffton University softball team will host day camps for advanced and youth players.

An advanced day camp will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on and July 18-19. During the camp, for students entering grades 7-12, participants will have the opportunity to advance their skills in fielding, hitting, base running and more under the guidance of Bluffton University coaches and players. The cost is $75.

A youth day camp will be held from 9 a.m.-4p.m. on July 20. This camp is for students entering grades 1-6 in the fall. This camp will teach softball fundamentals including proper throwing, fielding and hitting mechanics. Bluffton coaches and players will also lead this camp. The cost is $45.

Grand Lakes

The Grand Lake Fall League is taking registrations for the 2016 Fall League. The Fastpitch Softball league will be divided up into three divisions this year: 9th – 12th grade, 6th – 8th grade, and 3rd – 5th grade. The league will play double headers on Sundays for five weeks; there are not practices as to avoid any conflicts with fall sports. TENNIS

Lima

Applications are being taken for the 2016 Lima Area Tennis Association (LATA) Championship City singles, doubles and mixed tournaments to be held at the University of Northwestern Ohio Tennis Courts from July 8-22.

The singles competition will be held from July 8-15 with the doubles tournaments held July 15-17. The mixed doubles competition will be held July 22-24. To be eligible players must be entering the eighth grade in the fall of 2016 or a United States Tennis Association junior ranked player.

The entry fee is $30 per person per tournament for non members, $20 for per person per tournament for LATA members and $15 per person per tournament for high school age students. The deadline for entry fees is July 4 by 5 p.m. for singles, July 11 by 5 p.m. for doubles and July 18 by 5 p.m. for mixed competition.

The Lima Area Tennis Association and the Lima Parks and Recreation Department will be offering free tennis lessons for junior and pee wee divisions at the Collett Courts. The junior tennis lessons, for individuals ages 9-17, will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through June 21. The pee wee program, for individuals ages 5-8, will be held on Thursdays through July 21 from 9-945 a.m. Registration is the first day of lessons (donations accepted). All new players must show up by the third session. No exceptions. Tennis rackets are required. If you do not have a racket, LATA will provide one.

VOLLEYBALL

Bluffton

The Bluffton University volleyball team will host a variety of skills camps from June 20- June 22.

A serve, pass, dig camp for high school students will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 20. The camp will focus on the improvement of serving, passing and digging skills. The instruction will be focused and individualized.

A setting camp for high school students will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 21. The camp will provide individualized instruction for improving setting skills. Instruction will break down the technique and footwork for setting. Athletes will complete a series of drills that they can continue to use for improve their abilities.

A hitting camp for high school students will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on June 21. The camp will emphasize solid fundamentals and personalized instruction on improving hitting. Advanced styles of attacks will also be taught with the emphasis on the athletes being as efficient as possible.

A basic skills camp for students in grades 6-8 will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22. The basic skills of volleyball including passing, setting, attacking, serving and defense will be taught while emphasizing correct form and movement.

The cost for each of these camps is $45 and participants should bring a sack lunch.

A beginner camp for kindergarten through fifth grade students will take place from 10 a.m.-noon on June 22. The camp will focus on introducing all of the basic volleyball skills while incorporating fun volleyball activities. The cost for this camp is $25.

The camp staff is comprised of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion players and coaches as well as former Bluffton players. All campers will receive a t-shirt. The 2016 Cougar High School Volleyball Camp for girls entering grades 9-12 will be held at the Van Wert High School gym from July 18-21.
