Racing for more than just a win

LIMA — Every race is important for a driver. It’s just that some races mean a little more to individuals. Many drivers out there will be competing at a high level in the 15th annual Keysor Memorial with Kenny Wallace on Friday night at Limaland Motorsports Park. The pit gate opens at 4:30 and racing begins at 7:30.

Chris Douglas will be one driver out there hoping to win for more than just the joy of winning. Douglas is related to the Keysor family.

“Bob (Keysor) is my dad’s cousin and Bill was Bob’s dad,” Douglas said. “I was around Bobby a lot at the racetrack and I was also around Jerry Keysor a lot. Jerry is Bobby’s son.”

Douglas, who is currently in third place in the Bud Thunderstocks division, looks at the Keysor Memorial to be one of his biggest races of the year.

“It’s a big part of Limaland,” Douglas said. “It’s my biggest race of the year by far. We have one feature win this year and two second-place finishes. We definitely want to go after the points championship. A big win would be the Keysor Memorial and the King of the Quarter Mile later in the season.”

The comradery of racing is a big deal at Limaland according to Douglas.

“Everybody is very helpful,” Douglas said. “I have a crew that takes care of the car all week. Guys around the track are helpful. If you need something, there’s always somebody there to loan you a part or something.”

Having the family around the track is also something that Douglas enjoys.

“I’m a single dad with three kids who are always at the track with me,” Douglas said. “We’ve got them cleaning tires and things like that. My oldest, who is 14, is racing go-karts right now. So the whole family is involved. We are also a family owned team. My only sponsor is my dad’s car lot, Dave’s Reliable Motors.”

Having a son who may eventually compete against him at Limaland would be a great thing.

“It would be pretty awesome,” Douglas said. “I raced against my dad. Having him out there would make it that much better.”
