Area softball players received all-state honors

COLUMBUS — Several Lima area players have received all-state recognition from the Ohio High School Softball Coaches Association.

New Bremen’s Sophie Fox, Crestview’s Jada Preston and Cora Millay, Parkway’s Haley Hawk and Columbus Grove’s Brook Hoffman were named the Division IV first team.

In Division III, Indian Lake’s Sammi Miller made the first team.

In Division II, Wapakoneta’s Megan Fisher was selected to the second team. In Division III, Paulding’s Quinn Beck made the second team.

Honorable mention choices included Spencerville’s Kara May and Miller City’s Abigail Schroeder in Division IV.

Boys golf

Howe not returning

Lima Central Catholic coach Brock Howe has announced he will be not be returning next season. He compiled a record of 108-6 in six years. He led his team to the Division III State Tournament five times, finishing as the runner-up in 2011, ninth in 2010, fifth in 2012, seventh in 2013 and fifth in 2014. In all of Howe’s six years the Thunderbirds qualified for districts and were sectional champs in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

He was the North West District Coach of the year three times. LCC has begun the search immediately for a new coach. Those interested should contact Frank Kill at [email protected]. Applications will be accepted until June 17.

Hensel shoots

2-under 70

KALIDA — Britton Hensel shot a 2-under-par 70 to win the boys 16-18 division and for the low score of the day Tuesday during the Weisenburger Builders Open at Country Acres Golf Club. Jill Schmitmeyer had a 76 for the girls 16-18 crown and Christian Nartker shot an 84 for the boys 14-15 title. Carson Harmon shot a 43 to win the nine-hole boys 12-13 competition and Mary Kelly Mulcahy had a 44 for the girls 15 and under victory.

The Lima Junior Golf Association – McDonald’s Junior Series will next play Thursday in the Ohio Family Safety Junior Open at Hidden Creek Golf Club. For more information go to http://web.golfsoftware.net/11146/.

FOSTORIA — Several Lima area players are included on the West team for the 33rd annual Sunny Farms Landfill Coaches East-West All-Star Football Game to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Fostoria Stadium.

Those scheduled to play include Bluffton’s Blake Sampson and Kyle Swank, Cory-Rawson’s Jadyn Hall, Elida’s Logan Alexander and Tristan Edwards, Hardin Northern’s Storm Drumm, Preston Ribley, Wesley Schlatter and Blake Obenour, Leipsic’s Austin Chamberlin, Jordan Brown and Nate Brecht, Lima Senior’s Demontay Liles and Tavares Mills Jr., Pandora-Gilboa’s Hunter Hovest and Shawnee’s Griffin Hites and Austin Allison.

Ottawa wins 2

PIQUA — The Fighting 63rd defeated Piqua 8-6 and 7-0 Sunday.

In the 8-6 win, Jackson Lammers (Miller City) had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI and Brady Laudick (Kalida) doubled for Ottawa.

In the 7-0 victory, winning pitcher Josiah Shoemaker (Lima Senior) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out two in seven innings of work. Teammate Ryan Gossard (Bath) doubled.

Bluffton’s Aelker

top male athlete

BLUFFTON — All-American Ryan Aelker from Bluffton University has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Year following a senior season in which the senior defensive end was named the HCAC Defensive Most Valuable Player.

Aelker led the nation in sacks for the second-straight season, while adding the most tackles-for-loss in NCAA Division III to his resume. He racked up a school-record and NCAA-best 15.5 sacks as a senior and broke his own school record with 24 tackles for loss. The senior also led the conference with three forced fumbles this fall.

The HCAC Athlete of the Year award is in its third year of existence. The award is voted on by the sports information directors of each member institution.

Bluffton’s Webb

receives honor

BLUFFTON — Two-time All-American and Kenton graduate Terrill Webb from Bluffton University has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Athlete of the Year following her performances in indoor track and field and outdoor track and field during the 2015-16 school year.

The junior earned NCAA Division III indoor and outdoor track and field All-American accolades in the pole vault during her junior campaign.

Webb finished sixth at the NCAA Division III indoor championships with a school and personal record of 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches and earned a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III outdoor championships with a mark of 12 feet, 9 1/2 inches.
