Letter: Fact-check Huffman’s recent recollections

The stories in The Lima News “Ohio 135th General Assembly begins” and “Ohio after two years of Lima leadership” were an interesting read. It would have been even better if facts were checked.

In the first story, Huffman was quoted as saying, “Two years ago the ceremony was a little stilted because of the pandemic. I was sworn in on the front porch of my house.” His statement is true, but the story leaves out the fact he was sworn in there because Huffman and his wife had COVID-19 and could not take the oath in Columbus, as Bob Cupp did.

The second story details Huffman’s fight against the governor concerning COVID-19, which is oh so true. The second story also details redistricting.

In 2012, Huffman was on the Redistricting Commission and out of the debacle. On May 9, 2018, Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to reform the state’s redistricting.

We had a commission that couldn’t come together to accomplish the goal. They hired out-of-state experts and released them just when they were about to complete the mapping. We paid these experts tens of thousands of dollars and refused to use the product we were paying for.

They refused to meet. They should have been held in contempt of court.

We had a public hearing at OSU-Lima where the entry doors stated “masks were mandatory.” Huffman refused to wear a mask. How do I know? I was there and spoke.

We were required to hold two primaries, which was purported to have cost the taxpayers $20 to $25 million.

Now we will be going to go through the redistricting process again in 2024, and it will cost the taxpayers again.

I guess living in the “duck district,” we should expect this, but it does not mean we have to like it.
