Letter: Real solutions needed for lake

Thanks to The Lima News for the story about the highly polluted Grand Lake St. Marys. The Guardians of Grand Lake are often labeled as “finger-pointers” but if that is the label given to Guardians for telling the truth to the public then we are happy to have that label.

We believe the public deserves the truth about the continual degradation of Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM) from out-of-control and unchecked agricultural run-off. Public officials, Milt Miller, Sen. Faber, ODNR Zehringer and Rep. Buchy have participated in a misinformation campaign stating that the lake is getting better. Why are these four lying to the public? Their reason is that the economies around GLSM have suffered the loss of $200 million in tourism dollars. They have traded protecting the public’s health and investments for greater agribusiness profits and larger campaign contributions.

Guardians pride ourselves in bringing the truth to the public through educational programs. Recent programs have included highlighting good farming practices that can help clean up the lake. All the projects attempted thus far have been a waste of taxpayers money and were known by public officials that would do little to clean up the lake.

We believe there are solutions that are good for our lake and for farming. We will continue searching for real solutions.
