Local: Athletes participate in national senior games

We often hear of the National Olympics and the Special Olympics but there is another Olympics for all participants over 50 years of age called the National Senior Games. It is held every two years in a different state and the first one was held in 1987.

In July, the 15th Senior Games was held in Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington, Minnesota. Nineteen events were offered and Seniors participated in all.

Four Seniors from Lima participated in Minnesota this year and all placed in the top eight or better in the Nation. The four qualified in the local Olympics, and the State and then went to Nationals.

Tom Dautenhahn won a gold medal in tennis and Linda Clay, Richard Rocky, Sharon “Sam” Moening and Tom all placed in table tennis. There were over 10,000 seniors (ages 50 to 102) who participated and 600 participants from Ohio. Lima should be proud of the Senior Athletes.
