Letter: Protecting our beautiful American flag, monuments

I am writing this in regards to our American flag and the scenes on TV newscasts of protesters and rioters burning, desecrating and walking all over our U.S. flag.

We have thousands of American veterans who have served in the military, a lot of them disabled, defending our freedom. I can only imagine how they feel seeing these things happen. I know that we are free to protest, but protesting is just one step before rioting.

Rioting begins, then burning businesses, police cars, burning our flag, trampling it into the ground, waving foreign flags, painting, and defacing our monuments. These acts should be punishable by a minimum of one year in prison, and not just an overnight stay.

It is very disturbing for me to see these acts happening right here in the USA. We are very fortunate to be living here in our small towns and cities and not have to experience any of this like they do in the bigger cities, such as Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.

You may think this is very harsh treatment, but I think it is what we need to stop it. People who want to fly a foreign flag, we should buy them a one-way flight to that country, and there they can fly it all day. Stay there, we don’t want you here. Like the old saying goes, “If you don’t like it here, you are free to leave.” We will not miss you. Please go, and don’t come back.

I would like to add a comment about FortFest, which was held in Fort Jennings on August 16, 17 and 18. It was a very patriotic three-day event, honoring all our veterans. We want to thank the Huey, who led the motorcycle escort coming into town. There were 397 motorcycles, the beautiful antique cars, the Hueys, the Vietnam wall display. Thanks to the workers who helped set it up and take it down, all the re-enactment people, our hard working Fortfest committee members and a lot of others.

It takes a lot of planning and workers, and a small town has only so many available workers. But they did it and did it very well. I am sure that next year’s fest will be bigger and better.
