Letter: Freedom of speech vs. responsibility for decency

I am fortunate to be a resident of Shawnee Township. My home is near schools and churches, soccer fields and football stadiums. It’s an idyllic setting to make a home, raise a family and enjoy the retirement years.

Unfortunately, on a street not far from my home, a fellow community member has chosen to express the right of free speech by displaying a large flag on the front of the homes. On the flag is blatantly printed “(expletive) Biden.” This particular house is located less than a mile from several churches and the middle and high schools of the Shawnee school system.

I wonder what visitors to our area think about the standards of our community. Even more concerning, what lessons are our children learning as they pass by on the school bus each day?

As a staunch supporter of First Amendment rights, I have always admired the quote by Voltaire, who stated, “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” But, can we not agree to observe a certain level of decency and respect amongst our political discord? Please do a service to the community and take down that flag.
