Letter: Dawn of a new day in the United States

The Democratic National Convention marked a revival of the kind of democracy, political, social and spiritual directions that the American people have enjoyed over the years.

Granted, some moments spent were a disrobing of the anger, public scorn and ignorance that have plagued our society too long. However, with the election of Vice President Kamala Harris as presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, one could not help but to sense the words of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech to the thousands of people in Washington, D.C., in 1963.

I felt that the precepts of his speech, the emotional impact and the desire for a better world took flight to a higher level giving the American people hope that a new day has dawned. I thought maybe there should be an epilogue or an addendum to his speech with a change in verb tense to show the change that has taken place because of his dream, where every American regardless of race, color, creed or gender can be recognized and able to climb any ladder of success.

I think the first day, hopefully, sets the stage for the days ahead. With this type of forward thinking, regardless of who sits in the White House, female or male, change is on the horizon. This is the type of change spoken by politicians for years, but finally and hopefully realized through the election of Harris.
