Letter: Fact-check before you believe Moreno’s words

Appalling lies from Bernie Moreno, the Republican challenging Sherrod Brown for his Ohio U.S. Senate seat, were printed in the Saturday, Aug. 17 edition of The Lima News on page 6B.

According to Moreno, “We take better care of illegals in this country than our veterans… If you come into this country illegally, unlawfully, you get a check for $2,200 a month for nine months…free phones, free clothes, free healthcare… zero deductible, zero copay if you’re an illegal.”

A simple online search on the keywords “$2,200 a month” lists a number of sources that state this information is false. At the top of the results list is a post from AP News that says “AP Fact Check: No, migrants do not receive $2,200 each month from the federal government.”

Doing the same search in Factcheck.org, you find an Oct. 4, 2023, post: “Immigrants who come to the U.S. without authorization have very limited access to government benefits. But an old falsehood revived by conservatives conflates aid given to authorized refugees.”

And later in the post it says, “Misinformation is often recycled in this way and this claim, in particular, is a perfect example. It started as a falsehood about refugee assistance in Canada in 2004 and later migrated to the U.S. We wrote about versions of this claim, beginning in 2007, and then again in 2009, 2010, and 2019.” (Factcheck.org is an awarding-winning site: Go there and read “about us.”)

If no one else fact-checks, then every citizen must!
