Defiance College expands debt-free initiative to Putnam, Van Wert students

DEFIANCE — Defiance College revealed a new program for local high school students to earn their bachelor’s degree debt free.

The initiative, called the 1850 Promise in honor of the school’s founding in 1850, is an extension of Defiance College’s Define Your Future program, which provides loan repayment assistance and reduced tuition.

Participating students must maintain commuter status and permanent residence in Defiance, Henry, Fulton, Putnam, Paulding, Van Wert or Williams counties for the duration of the program to remain eligible.

The college accepts applications from local high school seniors for the 1850 Promise for 2025-26 school year.

Eligible students must maintain a cumulative high school grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and qualify for the Ohio College Opportunity Grant through the Free Application for Student Financial Aid, or FAFSA.
