Red Cross faces critical blood shortage

LIMA — The American Red Cross faces a severe national blood emergency compounded by Hurricane Debby and other recent severe weather events, according to the agency.

The impact of such weather, including blizzards, tornadoes, and hurricanes, often results in a loss of around 90,000 donations annually.

These conditions have disrupted efforts to replenish the nation’s blood supply, leading to the cancellation of nearly 60 blood drives and a shortfall of approximately 1,500 blood products. Both new and regular donors are urged to schedule appointments as soon as possible.

Donors who give by Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon.com Gift Card, while those who donate between Sept. 1 and 15 will receive an exclusive Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last. To make an appointment, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-733-2767.
