One message, many styles at fair’s Gospel Tent

LIMA — The Allen County Fair’s Gospel Singing Tent has long been a place for fairgoers to gather to hear songs of faith and Christian devotion.

This year, organizers hope that those attendees coming to hear the various Christian artists and speakers will leave not only entertained but edified and inspired as they live out their faith.

Organizer Lori McCollum said she hoped the activities at this year’s tent will help create a platform for people to hear the Gospel message of salvation as performers appeal to a wide variety of people.

“We wanted it to be more than just entertainment,” she said. “It’s not to say that the main mission of the tent prior to us taking over was just entertainment, but with it being called the ‘Gospel singing tent,’ we wanted to make sure that we focus on the ‘Gospel’ part and not just the ‘singing’ part of that. We wanted to see this as a mission.”

That effort will include musical performances from both local and nationally-recognized artists. Most performances start at 7 p.m.

Southern Gospel enthusiasts will want to be at the tent Satuday, Aug. 17, Sunday, Aug. 18 and Sunday, Aug. 19 as the Perrys, the Midsouth Band and the Browders perform on those nights, respectively.

The musical focus will then shift with Christian pop duo Caleb and John performing Monday, Aug. 20. Soulful worship artist Stephen McWhirter performs Tuesday, Aug. 21. Contemporary Christian artist Jordan St. Cyr will be on stage Thursday, Aug. 22.

Gospel/R&B artist Terrian will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.

The tent will also feature plenty of locally grown content, with the Lima First Church worship team holding a revival night at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16. A Sunday morning worship service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, Lima’s Veronica McLaurine will open for Terrian at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23. Worship Anyway wraps up the fair at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, with Revive Ohio on hand providing baptisms on request.

There will also be programs at the tent throughout the day for children as well as a seniors’ day Aug. 20.

All the events in the tent are free after paid admission to the fair thanks to donations, McCollum said.

“It’s funded by individuals, businesses and churches,” she said. “It’s a non-profit, and anybody who would want to donate, it’s tax-deductable. We also have big TV screens that recognize the individuals, businesses and churches that donate, so you can get free advertising there through the whole week.”
