Teen drivers have opportunity for free training

LIMA — Teen drivers will have an opportunity to practice crash avoidance techniques with a licensed instructor on a closed course at Lima Senior High School on Aug. 7 and 8.

These free four-hour sessions are organized by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office and will help teen drivers learn skills like skid recovery and how to deal with an anti-lock braking system.

Teens must have a valid temporary permit or a license before attending. To register, visit tinyurl.com/54t4k6ra.

This training will not count toward the required training teens must complete to get their driver’s license, which is 24 hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of driving with a licensed instructor.

A news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the leading causes of teen crashes in Ohio include failure to control, failure to yield and unsafe speed. In 2023 in Ohio, there were 102 fatal youth-related crashes during the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In Allen County, drivers under 24 were involved in 35% of all crashes, and there were 997 youth-related crashes in the county in 2023.
