Busing changes under consideration at Elida schools

ELIDA — Elida schools may alter bus routes due to a shortage of available drivers for the upcoming school year.

Superintendent Joel Mengerink notified the Elida school board Tuesday of the potential busing changes, as the district tries to hire six drivers before the start of the school year.

Mengerink did not offer a formal recommendation but listed several potential solutions if the district is unable to fill all open positions.

Those solutions may include fewer routes or fewer stops per route, staggered start times or discontinuation of busing for open enrollment students.

Each bus currently transports an average of 60 students, Mengerink said.

The board did not take action on busing changes Tuesday.
