Sheriff’s office hosts National Night Out and D.A.R.E. 5K

LIMA — The Allen County Sheriff’s Office will host its sixth annual National Night Out and D.A.R.E. 5K event on Aug. 6 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Allen County Fairgrounds in the Roschman Park area, 2750 Harding Highway, Lima.

The sheriff’s office departments in attendance will be K-9 corps, mounted posse, SWAT team, dive team, patrol division and bomb squad. Departments from other agencies will also be displayed.

The 5K will start at 7 p.m. and will benefit the Allen County D.A.R.E. program by helping the program fund D.A.R.E. student diplomas, the D.A.R.E. concert, summer camps, shirts and classroom drug education resources.

Awards will be given to men and women in age groups 17 and younger; 18 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49 and 50 and older. All participants ages 12 and younger who complete the race will receive a prize. The top three men and women will be entered in a drawing for a JBL CHARGE 5 waterproof speaker with one speaker for the men and one for the women.

The price to enter the 5K is $30 for participants 18 and older, $20 for those 12 to 17 years old, and free for ages 11 and younger.

According to the 5K event’s sign up page, last year the event saw 1,100 people in attendance. Prior to this event, the page said the D.A.R.E. officer had to spend about 25% of his time getting donations for the youth activities D.A.R.E. hosts, but with this event the officer doesn’t have to raise funds on a regular basis.
