Mercer sheriff’s office to host active shooter training

ROCKFORD — The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office will conduct its ninth active shooter training for all Mercer County law enforcement and surrounding agencies on July 2 and 3 at Parkway Local Schools, 400 Buckeye St., Rockford.

Training will consist of a short classroom portion and hands-on scenarios with people role playing intruders and victims. Air soft guns will be used to help simulate force on force training.

Past locations for the training included several different school districts and a former residential facility.

“Our hope is to allow all of the officers from Mercer County to train in differing types of structures so that they are better prepared for circumstances like this,” Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey wrote in a news release. “We hope that we never have to use the training, but want to be as prepared as possible if we do.”

Grey said officers will be present in and around the building and training warning notices will be posted. The building will be closed to the public.

The sheriff’s office is covering the cost of the training.
