Two manufacturers win state tax credits for expansions in Cleveland

SHALERSVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A firearms manufacturer and pipe fittings maker won state tax credits Monday, and have plans to expand that will create an estimated 136 jobs in Chardon and Shalersville Township.

Ohio Ordnance Works and Viega were among six companies that had tax credits approved Monday by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority.

Ohio Ordnance Works, which make firearms and parts for firearms, plans to expand its facility in Chardon, according to the Ohio Department of Development.

The company plans to create 70 new jobs. It received a six-year tax credit worth $227,000. The company already employs about 100 people.

Viega is planning to open its first Ohio facility in Portage County’s Shalersville Township. It will be the first tenant in a 1 million-square-foot facility on Ohio Route 44 just north of the Ohio Turnpike. The company sells plumbing, heating and pipe connections that are use in heating and cooling systems.

The company plans to create 68 jobs at its new facility. It received an eight-year tax credit worth $315,000, according to a news release from Team NEO.

For both projects, the tax credits are performance based, so the companies will only get the tax credits if employment goals are met.

Six projects approved for tax credits would create 332 new jobs across the state, according to the governor’s office. Other projects included a Pepsi bottling facility in Franklin County, a marketing firm in Hamilton County, an IT company in Montgomery County and a data center in Erie County.
