Chief Supermarket to close Harding Highway store

LIMA — The Chief Supermarket on Harding Highway will close later this month, the store’s management company, Fresh Encounter Inc., said in a press release on Thursday.

In a statement, President/CEO Michael Needler Jr. said the Harding Highway store was under-performing and not profitable.

“We will work respectfully in the days ahead with associates impacted at the Harding Highway location to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, with some opportunities available in other store locations,” Needler Jr. stated in a press release.

Chief Supermarkets operates 11 other locations in northwest Ohio, including stores on South Cable Road and North Northern Avenue in Lima, which Fresh Encounter said will remain open. The Harding Highway supermarket previously operated under the Rays brand.

Discount grocery store brand Aldi opened a store on Harding Highway in late 2018, likely creating competition for Chief Supermarket on the east side.

Chief will offer 20% off closeout pricing at the Harding Highway store starting Friday, Jan. 3.
