Woman charged with perjury for lying on witness stand

LIMA — A Lima woman appeared in Lima Municipal Court Wednesday morning for a preliminary hearing during which she was charged with perjury, a third-degree felony, for allegedly lying on the witness stand during a trial earlier this month in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

Tavionna Hall, 22, is alleged to have deliberately lied to jurors during testimony she gave in the trial of Deandre Baskin, her former boyfriend and the father of one of Baskin’s children. The nature of the untruths Hall is believed to have told jurors was not immediately made known.

Baskin, 46, was convicted by a jury March 6 on charges of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; abduction, a felony of the third-degree; domestic violence, a fourth-degree felony, and violating a protection order, a felony of the fifth degree. He will be sentenced April 18.

According to court documents, Hall returned from work to her home at 824 N. Metcalf St., Lima, on the evening of Dec. 3 and when she went upstairs she found a closet door closed — which she told police was out of the ordinary. As she went to examine the closet, Baskin reportedly opened the closet door and struck Hall in the eye. A scuffle continued and Hall suffered a cut on her leg before she was able to escape from Baskin, according to court records.

Baskin had active protective order against him and was on post-release control from jail at the time of the incident. He at first denied he had been at the Metcalf Street home but later admitted to investigators that he was at the residence, according to court documents.
