OSU exec visits Lima campus

LIMA — The No. 2 ranking official at Ohio State University visited the OSU-Lima regional campus Thursday, meeting with students in an attempt to learn what’s on the minds of individuals pursuing a higher education locally.

Dr. Bruce McPheron is the executive vice president and provost for Ohio State University and oversees the administration, coordination and development of all academic functions of the university. As OSU’s chief academic officer, he is also responsible for the administration and strategic planning, development and review processes for the university’s academic mission.

A Hardin County native and a graduate of Kenton High School, McPheron earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois.

During his visit to the Lima campus, McPheron met informally with some two dozen students who are active in various student clubs on campus.

“It feels good to be home,” the OSU official told the students, “and I hope it feels like home to you, too. This is a place that enables your success and gets you off on the right foot.”

McPheron asked the students why they had selected the OSU-Lima campus to pursue their post-high school education. Almost immediately, one of the students responded, “Money!”

Others said the small college setting allowed them to connect more closely with faculty members, while others said the close proximity to their home and family was a deciding factor in the decision to attend OSU-Lima. Still others said they found it difficult as incoming freshmen to gain admission to the university’s main campus.

“The regional campuses are definitely value-added to the university,” said McPheron. “And anyone who enters these doors and excels will have access to the main campus or any of our other regional campuses.

“And we will continue to focus on making the Lima campus more affordable. We have been working toward that goal and it’s something we intend to achieve,” McPheron said.

The OSU vice president also said that university leaders continue to discuss and consider adding additional dormitory housing on all regional campuses.

McPheron encouraged the local students to shoot for the skies during their academic careers.

“Don’t think small; you have no way of knowing where you’re going to end up,” he said.
