Real Wheels: One prized possession

ELIDA — Dennis Shaw, of Elida, brought his 1966 Chevy Corvette Stingray Coupe to the Westgate Charity Car Show in June.

Shaw has owned this beauty for 47 years. He has taken it to various car shows throughout our area, as well as the Corvette Car Show in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Shaw’s car won Best of Show in 2016 at the Bowling Green, Kentucky, show.

“It was judged by the people that were building them,” said Shaw.

The print ad advertising the 1966 Chevrolet Corvette read, “Some purists snickered in 1953 when Chevrolet brought out a fiber glass sports car with an automatic transmission. They’ve been strangely silent lately.”

The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was named No. 5 on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s by Sports Car International in 2004. The Stingray was designed by Bill Mitchell and first introduced in 1963.

The 1966 Chevy Corvette set sales records that year with 27,720 units sold. That was an increase of more than 4,000 over the 1965 Chevy Corvette’s sales.
