Real Wheels: Rehabbing a ‘Shoebox Ford’

LIMA — Roger Griffith of Lima owns this beautiful 1949 Ford, and he brought it to the Westgate Charity Car Show in June. Griffith has owned the car since 1994.

The 1949 Ford was the first all-new vehicle designed after World War II. Prior to this, production had been suspended at auto facilities due to the war. The 1949 Ford made its first appearance at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The “Shoebox Ford,” as these models were referred to, is credited with saving Ford and ushering the integrated fenders design on automobiles.

While this stunning car looks beautiful now, it didn’t always look this way. Griffith said the frame was rusted, and the front end had been wrecked. It took quite a bit of work getting it to look this way. He painted the car Candy Apple Red.

Griffith explained that he and his brother always had cars growing up, and when he saw this one, he had to have it. He has driven it as far as Missouri for a car show.
