Real Wheels: Great times in this Yenko Nova

LIMA — Keith Hunt, of Lima, brought his 1974 Yenko Nova to the Westgate Charity Car Show recently.

Hunt has owned this car since high school and has great memories of those days.

“I drove it to high school at Bath,” Hunt said. “I had some good times at the Springbrook Drive-In. These kids today don’t know what they are missing. Those were some of the best times of my life, a guy and his girl could be alone for a few hours at the drive-in.”

Retired race car driver Don Yenko of Yenko Chevrolet changed some Novas, Chevelles and Camaros, boosting the performance to challenge the Ford Mustangs, Plymouth Barracudas and Dodge Challengers. The Yenko Nova had a stronger body frame and suspension to hold the heavy V8 engine. The price of the Yenko Novas in 1974 ran between $2,810 to $3,105. The average auction price of a 1974 Yenko Nova in 2013 was $11,338.

Hunt said he had owned two 1967 Ford Mustangs, but nothing compares to this Nova.
