LIMA — A Lima City Council member is hoping to encourage people to come forward with information on recent shootings in Lima.
In a press conference Thursday, 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn announced he is contributing $1,000 into a reward fund for information leading to arrests and convictions for three recent shootings in downtown Lima.
The first occurred July 1 in the parking lot of the South Main Street Family Dollar, an incident in which more than 30 shots were fired and two people were injured. The second is the July 5 shooting death of Davohn Godsey at the Gas Station Bar, a shooting in which Marlon Godsey was also injured. The third is the Wednesday shooting on West Wayne Street that left a bullet hole in a parked car. No one was injured in that incident.
To overcome this group of increased shootings in Lima, it will take the combined effort of the entire community, not just city administration or law enforcement, according to Glenn.
“We’ve been having a lot of shootings in the city of Lima, and it will take the entire community coming together and working together to stop this,” he said. “We’re going to put a stop to this. We’ve got to because we’ve got too many young people dying.”
Glenn is hoping that others will also contribute to the reward fund, offering an increased incentive for witnesses to come forward.
“I know $1,000 is not enough for a lot of people to give information,” he said. “If you have any information and you give it to the police and they get arrested and convicted, you’ll get that $1,000.”
Glenn is also calling on the community to reach out to young people to help show them that gun violence is not the answer.
“We’ve got to hit the streets,” he said. “We’ve got to talk to our kids.”
Glenn is also hopeful for more information to come to light on how guns are getting onto Lima’s streets, giving law enforcement the chance to keep those guns off the streets before shootings take place and lives are lost.
“We can’t let this continue to go on,” he said. “We’ve got to come together to let police know where the guns are coming from.”
