Waynesfield native seeks Ohio House seat

WAYNESFIELD — After working for an area legislator in the nation’s capital, a Waynesfield native has returned home and hopes to take her experience to Columbus.

Republican Susan Manchester, 30, has announced her candidacy for Ohio’s 84th House District seat, the seat currently held by Rep. Keith Faber, R-Celina, who is running for Ohio Auditor next year. The 84th District covers eastern Auglaize County, all of Mercer County, the northern portion of Darke County and western and northern Shelby County.

For Manchester, her desire to become a state representative stems from her desire to address what she sees as the top priorities in her district.

“Preserving agriculture is number one, being the number one industry in the district,” she said. “Also, [I want to be] fighting for local control of education and addressing the future of health care in our state. I know the repeal and replacement of Obamacare is a federal issue, but the state government has a role to play in that, as well. I would also be advocating for business and workforce development, coming not only from an educational perspective, but also a regulatory perspective. Finally, I would be defending the right to life. I think that if we don’t value the unique contribution that any individual life can make to this world, we are really missing out.”

After graduating from Ohio State University in 2010, Manchester worked for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, in Washington, D.C., while earning a master’s degree in political management from George Washington University. Gaining a national political perspective helped her appreciate the importance of politics at the state and local levels, she said.

“When I was in Washington, I saw how real the disconnect is,” she said. “I saw how easy it was for folks to lose sight of what was going on at the ground level. I think that was a big reason why I had such a drive to come back. I wanted to be back in the community where I was raised where I can be more intimately connected with the issues. I want Columbus to be reflective of the values of the people of west central Ohio.”
