Ohio EPA seeking public comments on INEOS injection wells

LIMA — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comments regarding INEOS Nitrilis USA’s continuing operation of four Class 1 hazardous wastewater injection wells on the company’s Lima property.

The comments will be accepted at a public information session at 6 p.m. July 12 at the Lima Municipal Center, 50 Town Square. The meeting will take place in Lima City Council Chambers, located inside the municipal center.

During the information session, EPA representatives will present information about draft permits for INEOS Nitrilis’ injection wells, and will answer questions. At the hearing, which will immediately follow the information session, the public can submit comments for the record regarding the permits. If approved, the permits would be valid for six years.

“This is a pretty straightforward renewal permit,” said Heather Lauer, spokeswoman for the Ohio EPA.

Lauer added that the EPA is required to hold public hearings on the permits every six years.

INEOS Nitriles manufactures acrylonitrile and associated products at its facility on Fort Amanda and Adgate roads. The deep wells are used for disposal of wastewater generated on site from the manufacturing process. The wells are also permitted to receive wastewater from Fort Amanda Specialties, a chemical manufacturing company that is adjacent to INEOS.

Copies of the draft permits and related documents may be viewed at the Lima Public Library, 650 W. Market St., the Ohio EPA’s Central Office, 50 W. Town St., Columbus, or the Ohio EPA’s Northwest District Office, 347 N. Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green.

Written comments on the draft permits will be accepted at the hearing or may be mailed to Ohio EPA, Division of Drinking and Ground Waters, Attn: UIC Unit Supervisor, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216. Comments will be accepted until July 18.
