Despite chance of rain, Lima’s Spectacular good to go

LIMA — It was a calm scene Sunday in Faurot Park, with carnival rides sitting silently in expectation of the crowds coming for Monday’s 23rd annual Star Spangled Spectacular, set to kick off at 8:30 a.m. with the Abilities League Baseball Game at Diamond 2, followed by the Freedom 5K Run/Walk at 9 a.m.

“We’re all set,” event Chairman Jeff Ramey said. “We’re just praying for good weather. The stage went in today, and everything else is set up. The vendors will be here early in the morning and all the co-chairs will be there early. We did most of our set up on Friday, and there will be a few last minute things we’ll do in the morning before the Freedom 5K.”

As of Sunday evening, AccuWeather.com was forecasting periods of rain throughout the day with a high of 78 degrees, with clouds breaking and more humid conditions forecast for the evening hours with a low of 67 degrees.

Unless the area would experience heavy, persistent rain, everything should run on schedule, according to Ramey.

“A little rain shower won’t stop us,” he said. “We do have a rain plan in place if it gets to the point where we can’t fire the fireworks, but otherwise, we are a go.”

The contingency plan when it comes to rain is to fire the fireworks at 10 p.m. Tuesday. However, neither the rides nor the musical entertainment, such as the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, R&B group Phase 5, and the Lima Concert Band, would be included.

“Unless the forecast changes, I think we’ll have a good day,” Ramey said. “It may not be perfect, but it’ll still be a good day.”

Musical entertainment will begin on the Faurot Park main stage at 6 p.m. leading up to the fireworks show at 10 p.m. A full schedule of events can be found at http://lima4th.com.
