Lima Memorial begins college intern program

LIMA — While many young people tend to think of their future job being out of the area or even out of state, Lima Memorial Health System is hoping a new internship program can remind area natives in college that their future career might be close to home.

Lima Memorial has taken in 10 interns and one fellow representing such schools as Lima Central Catholic, Bath, Spencerville, St. Marys and Ada to work in a variety of departments within the organization. Exposing these college sophomores and juniors to real-life work experience can help them both in the classroom and as they prepare to begin their careers after college.

“You can only learn so much in the classroom,” according to Jenna Kahle, a Spencerville graduate and soon-to-be junior at Bowling Green State University. She is interning in Lima Memorial’s finance department. “It’s awesome to see a real professional setting with real data. I’m hoping to get a good hands-on experience out of it.”

Interns are also working in administration, health services, information technology, performance improvement, heart and vascular, marketing, radiology and emergency medicine.

“We’ve fit them in where they have an interest,” LMH president and CEO Mike Swick said. “We really want people to come back to the community and be part of the community, knowing there are job opportunities here.”

With healthcare representing one of the fastest growing fields of employment, Lima Memorial has sought to emphasize that there may be jobs available in a hospital setting that may not fall in the traditional healthcare category, such as finance or information technology.

“My mom and dad were talking about how healthcare will always have a need for IT people,” IT intern and Bob Jones University sophomore Benjamin Sherrick said. “Working with the software has been pretty neat, along with talking with people in the field. It would be nice to come home after school, but something else may come up, too.”
