Planned Dominion East expansion clears next hurdle

LIMA — The barriers for the proposed Dominion East Ohio office building on South Jackson Street are continuing to come down.

Lima City Council received the petition for the vacation of the 100 block of South Jackson Street during its regular meeting Monday. In order to grant the vacation of the street, adjacent landowners must be notified of the petition by the council and a public hearing has to take place before the council can vote on the matter. In accordance with those regulations, Lima City Council scheduled a public hearing on the vacation to take place during the July 25 Lima City Council meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lima Municipal Building.

Along with the South Jackson Street petition, 14 ordinances were passed during the meeting, including one permitting the Lima Police Department to accept the donation of a German Shepherd puppy to be trained for one of the department’s K-9 units. The donation allows for the replacement of a soon-to-be retired police dog and saves the department a potential $6,500 expense to replace the dog.

In another police-related ordinance, the council voted to apply for Justice Assistance Grant funds from the U.S. Department of Justice. Should the department be awarded this grant, allocated this year in the amount of $40,655, Lima Police Department and the Allen County Sheriff”s Office would each receive $18,295, with the Police Department receiving an additional $4,065 for administrative costs. Previous awards were used for various law enforcement activities, according to a letter to the council from Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin.

Several members of the council were also on hand for the first public hearing regarding Community Development Block Grant applications for next year. The second CDBG public hearing will take place before the next Lima City Council meeting June 20.
