Jonathan Shively Memorial

Scholarships handed out

LIMA — The Jonathan R. Shively Memorial Scholarship fund awarded scholarships to three Perry seniors, Hannah Blankenship, Kimberly Dove and Brandon Neal. They received the scholarships during the academic awards ceremony on May 23.

The Northwest Central Conference gave scholarships in Coach Shively’s name to Kiley Valenti of Waynesfield-Goshen and Brock Bowman of Temple Christian.

Shively, a Perry alumni, taught for 17 years at Perry schools, coached many sports and was athletic director until he lost his battle with cancer in July 2011. His wish was to provide scholarships so students could continue their education.

Head Start program in Van Wert and

Auglaize Counties enrolling for fall

VAN WERT — Applications are being accepted for enrollment in the fall 2016-17 Head Start program at Kids Learning Place in Van Wert and Auglaize Counties.

This no cost, half-day preschool program is open to income-eligible families with children from 3 to 5 years of age.

The classrooms in Van Wert and St. Marys include early childhood education in a safe and friendly environment with experienced teachers with degrees. A home-based visiting program is also available that covers both counties.

Marsh Foundation holds spring celebration and

graduation

VAN WERT — The Marsh Foundation held its annual spring celebration May 25. The day included piano recitals, a musical production of “The Wizard of Oz,” a graduation ceremony, and a luncheon. Three students were honored for receiving their high school diplomas.

More than 35 students participated in the festivities. Many received academic awards for their successes throughout the school year.

Crestview holds commencement and

honors top graduates

CONVOY — Crestview High School held its annual Baccalaureate and Commencement Program on May 28. The featured speaker was Michael Saylor, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Top students of the graduating class included John Bauer, Brady Guest, and Hannah Bowen. All three addressed their fellow classmates. Also speaking was the senior class president, Adam Saylor.

Outstanding Senior Awards were presented to Noah Daugherty and Hannah Bowen.

Ada student selected to perform with the America

Honor Band in the 2017 Rose Parade

ADA — Elizabeth “Libbie” Milks, a senior at Ada High School, was selected by Music for All to be a member of the Bands of America Honor Band in the 2017 Tournament of Roses Parade. She was selected from among thousands of applicants across the nation for membership in this prestigious national honor band. She is the daughter of Michael and Beth Milks. Her band director is Mr. Jonathan M. Lischak.

The Band of America is a 300-piece national ensemble with winds, percussion and a flag and dance team. Milks, a flute player, will spend a week in southern California, where she will have rehearsals, performances at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and Disneyland, special activities and a featured appearance in the world-famous parade.

The 128th Rose Parade presented by Honda and themed “Echoes of Success” will take place at 8 a.m. Jan. 2. It will be broadcast on ABC, Hallmark Channel, HGTV, KTLA, NBC, RFD-TV and Univision.

North Middle School Builders earn recognition

LIMA — The Builders Club at Lima North Middle School has been named a Distinguished Club by Kiwanis International.

The club joins 21 other clubs from around the country to earn this status. It is the only club in Ohio to do so.

To qualify for the distinction, clubs must meet certain criteria, including having done multiple service projects.

Builders Club is the middle school club of Kiwanis. The North club is sponsored by the Lima Kiwanis Club. It started at North about six years ago. The adviser is Joel Ellerbrock.

Auglaize County Educational Academy

celebrates graduation

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Educational Academy held a graduation ceremony June 1. The ceremony, the first of its kind for the school, was held at the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta. There were 17 students who graduated.

The Auglaize County Educational Academy is a local, online, tuition-free school open to all students in grades K-12. Students are provided the technology they need to access all programs needed to successfully complete school online. The school also offers tutoring and classroom assistance for its students at the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta.

Area residents receive National Merit Scholarships

WAPAKONETA — The National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced some 3,000 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winner from among the finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Sarina M. Dangelo, of Wapakoneta, received the National Merit Scholarship to the University of Alabama. She plans to enter a career field in microbiology/immunology. She attends Wapakoneta High School.

Serena N. Hostetter, of New Knoxville, was awarded the National Merit Scholarship to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She plans to major in engineering. She attends New Knoxville High School.
