Apollo Career Center announces GED/ABEL/ESOL info

LIMA — Apollo Career Center announces orientation for the 2016 GED test.

The GED test is made up of four sections, which are math, reading and language, social studies and science. The GED test has just been recalibrated from 150 for passing to 145. The instructors can help prepare students for the new test by offering free pretests, computer instruction and individual subject instruction to meet the requirements to pass the new GED test.

The test is $120, but an $80 voucher is being offered by the state until June 30 to take the official test.

Free ABLE instruction is also available for students who want to update their basic skills, prepare for job search and prepare for postsecondary instruction.

English as a Second Language classes are offered at Apollo as well as in St. Marys.

University of Findlay’s student newspaper wins awards

FINDLAY — The Pulse, the University of Findlay’s student newspaper won multiple Ohio Newspaper Association awards in various categories for coverage during 2015.

A first place award was garnered for overall news coverage; a second place award was won in opinion writing by Abbey Nickel; a second award in sports coverage and a second place award in photojournalism by Tijana Raicevic and Jingyun Liao.

Area residents named to Shawnee State University dean’s list

VAN WERT — Four area students were named to Shawnee State University’s fall dean’s list.

Daniel Perkins, of Van Wert; Carlie Hertel, of Findlay; Morgan Klinger, of Convoy; and Heather Belcher, of Bellefontaine.

Local students in Spanish Club at Ashland University

LIMA — Three local students are part of Ashland University’s Spanish Club.

Molly Scott, of Lima, is majoring in exercise science. She is the daughter of Roger and Mary Scott, of Lima. She is a 2013 graduate of Shawnee High School.

Elizabeth Kidd, of Lima, is majoring in integrated mathematics. She is the daughter of Kevin and Kathleen Kidd, of Lima. She is a 2014 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School.

Matthew Wilcox, of Ada, is majoring in exercise science. He is the son of Thomas and Brenda Wilcox, of Ada. He is a 2014 graduate of Ada High School.

2 residents part of Student Senate at Ashland University

LIMA — Molly Scott and Logan Rex, both of Lima, are members of Ashland University’s Student Senate.

Scott is the daughter of Roger and Mary Scott, of Lima. She is a 2013 graduate of Shawnee High School and is majoring in exercise science.

Rex is the son of Randy and Kimberly Rex, of Lima. He is a 2014 graduate of Bath High School and is majoring in political science.

Student Senate strives to serve as a medium for expressing student opinion and works to promote the campus community. Students must be elected by the student body and maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

Ohio Northern University presents journalist Kelsey Timmerman

ADA — Ohio Northern University presents journalist Kelsey Timmerman in the McIntosh Center Ballroom at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Timmerman’s presentation, “Where Am I Wearing? A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories and People That Make Our Clothes,” is part of ONU’s “Unite for Awareness Week,” an initiative to bring attention to issues of discrimination.

Timmerman has traveled extensively after curiosity about where his clothes came from led him from Honduras to Bangladesh to Cambodia to China and back again. A book-signing will follow the presentation. This event is free and open to the public.

Elida grad to perform at BGSU

ELIDAPianist Paul Barnes, a 1980 graduate and salutatorian of Elida High School, will be performing at the Bryan Recital Hall in the Moore Musical Arts Center on the campus of Bowling Green State University at 8 p.m. Monday.

Barnes will be performing from his newly released CD “New Generations: The New Etudes of Philip Glass and Music of the Next Generation.”

Barnes will be this year’s commencement speaker at Elida High School’s graduation on May 29.
