DECA students qualify for international contest
LIMA — Six Lima Senior High School DECA students will compete in the international DECA competition April 22 to 27 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The students qualified for the contest following the state competition this past weekend in Columbus. Here are the names of those headed to the DECA International Career Development Conference and how they finished at state:
Taylor Lesh: Second place in Financial Consulting.
Mikaela Moore, Kayla O’Dell and Danielle Bash: Third place for “Austin’s Army” Community Service Project.
Dakota Stocker and Derek Snider: Gold in School Based Enterprise.
Taylor Lesh also won a $1,500 Bob Berns Scholarship.
Jordan announces 2016 Art Competition
LIMA — U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, is encouraging high school students in the 4th Congressional District to submit their best artwork to the 2016 Congressional Art Contest.
Up to two winners may be chosen from each high school, and students must be residents of the 4th Congressional District to be eligible. The 14 counties in the 4th Congressional District include Allen, Auglaize, Champaign, Crawford, Logan, Sandusky, Seneca, Shelby, Union and parts of Erie, Huron, Lorain, Marion and Mercer.
School-level winners must be received by Jordan’s district office by 5 p.m. April 5 in order to participate in the districtwide competition. The district winner will be announced at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 22 at Temple Christian School in Lima.
Students released early before spring break
LIMA — Students in Lima schools will be released early from school Thursday. Students are off for spring break beginning Friday, and school will resume March 30.
Here are release times for individual schools:
1 p.m.: Lima North Middle School.
1:15 p.m.: Freedom Elementary School, Heritage Elementary School, Independence Elementary School, Unity Elementary School, South Science and Technology Magnet School, Lima Senior Alternative School.
1:30 p.m.: Liberty Arts Magnet School, Lima Senior High School.
1:45 p.m.: Lima West Middle School.
Crestview takes first in quiz tournament
CONVOY — The Crestview Middle School Scholastic Bowl team completed their season by bringing home a championship at the Van Wert Middle School National Academic Quiz Tournament.
Crestview Red team completed the night with a 5-0 record. The Crestview Blue team finished with a 3-2 record.
St. John’s students to present Stations of the Cross
DELPHOS — The fifth-graders at Delphos St. John’s will be presenting Living Stations of the Cross for kindergarten through sixth-graders Thursday at the school.
Living Stations will also be presented at noon Friday at Delphos St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Unique music options provided at Liberty
LIMA — Before the youngest of Liberty Arts Magnet students start taking band and orchestra, the school has some other unique music options to get them started.
The school has a dulcimer ensemble and a steel drum band. First- and second-graders are selected to the dulcimer group and third- and fourth-graders are in the steel drum ensemble.
The two groups are led by elementary music teacher Paul Eckert. The dulcimer ensemble meets from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. on Wednesdays. The steel drum band meets from 11:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Emergency management director talks to students
CONVOY — Rick McCoy, Van Wert County emergency management director, gave a presentation to Crestview third-grade classes regarding storm safety.
As part of his presentation, McCoy discussed with students the history of tornadoes in Van Wert County. Students were able to see video footage of the 2002 Van Wert tornado and learn about safety measures, facts, and precautions they can use if they are in a situation where a tornado crosses their path.
McCoy also reviewed weather vocabulary with the third-graders. Following the video, students were able to ask McCoy questions.
