Telephone, online scams on the rise, Auglaize sheriff says

WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that telephone and computer-based scams are increasing, with the office receiving several complaints of individuals being scammed while selling or making purchases online.

The department reminded online shoppers that criminals can gain access to credit card information and make charges to accounts. Shoppers are also advised to never send more than the original price. If a seller requests more, shoppers should cancel the purchase.

In addition, the IRS, banks and utility companies will not call to ask for money, nor will they increase your bill and call you for money. Calls like these are from scam artists who, although they can sound very legitimate, are criminals, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone in any of these situations is advised to call the Sheriff’s Office or any other law enforcement agency.
