High-speed chase suspect remains in hospital

LIMA — The man who led police officers on a high-speed chase last week remained in the hospital Monday.

Christopher McAllister, 33, remained at Lima Memorial Health System, where he was listed in critical condition Monday, a hospital official said. Lima Police Sgt. Paula Strickler said McAllister was severely injured after he crashed the car he stole. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The case remained under investigation and no charges had been filed. Police officials were waiting to see what happens with McAllister, Strickler said.

The crash happened at 5:15 p.m. Feb. 23 on East Elm Street near Lincoln Park. Police officials said McAllister stole a car from the Shell gas station at West Market and South Metcalf streets. The keys were left in the car, Strickler said.

A police officer on patrol spotted the car near Faurot Avenue and South Baxter Street a short time later. The officer followed the vehicle while checking on it and then tried to stop the car but the man drove off at a high rate of speed, Strickler said.

McAllister is from out of state but investigators have not narrowed down his last address. He has a criminal record in Indiana but also has previous addresses in Michigan, Strickler said.
