Superior expands customer base

LIMA — Superior Credit Union Inc. secured its state charter, allowing it to expand its services to outlying communities.

The expansion allows the financial cooperative to open its service to 11 surrounding counties: Paulding, Defiance, Henry, Wood, Hancock, Seneca, Wyandot, Marion, Shelby, Logan and Union counties.

Superior will also continue its services in Allen, Auglaize, Putnam, Mercer, Van Wert and Hardin counties.

Superior representative Matt Otto said the cooperative will continue to be headquartered in Lima and current customers will have no interruption or change in service.

“The state charter allows us to expand the area where we can serve,” Otto said. “Under a federal charter, we were reserved to a six-county area. This will allow us to expand our footprint into outlying counties.”

Otto said it remains to be seen how many offices will be opened in the new area.

“We are in a mode of wait and see right now,” Otto said. “It will take a little time. Plans are not in place yet, but the long-term plans are branch expansions and possibly some acquisitions.”

The full-service, member-owned financial cooperative offers a full line of banking services including consumer and mortgage loans, brokerage services, insurance services, checking and savings accounts, and small-business services and loans. Superior has 10 office locations and serves 53,000 members.

Because of the change in charter, Otto said the cooperative will have minor changes to its name and logo, formerly known as Superior Federal Credit Union. Current members will be sent new debit cards and checks, but will experience no disruption in service.

Superior CEO Phil Buell said the company is excited to expand its area for customers.

“Superior is well-known for offering higher rates on deposits,” Buell said. “We have competitive loan rates and lower service fees. What sets us apart is our commitment to technology and quality service.”
