Students reach for the stars

LIMA — Students at the Ohio State Beauty Academy got a chance to use their creativity Thursday during the Out of This World Hair competition held at the UNOH Event Center.

Fifty-one students were responsible for finding their own clients. They were judged on uniqueness, hair nails, makeup and overall look by a panel of judges. Other than that, the sky was the limit with virtually no parameters to slow down their creativity.

“The girls have been preparing for this event for a month,” said OSBA instructor Alicia King. “So this wasn’t something that we just threw together. They all put a lot of time into it.”

King said the event gives the students a chance to showcase their talent in front of friends and family, as well as several salons from Lima and the surrounding area that are invited to the event.

The students had plenty of chances to show what they could do, as more than 1,000 were in attendance. The title of this year’s event led to a space theme, and students were able to get both wild and extremely creative.

“The students are gaining confidence and also are getting ideas from other people,” King said. “It is great for them to get the chance to expose what they have learned to this many people.”

Students had to find their own “clients” for the competition, most of which turned out to be friends, boyfriends and girlfriends or family members. Josie Taylor, 19, of Indian Lake, chose high school friend Dianna Meek. She had her friend looking futuristic in a wild hairdo and glittery makeup.

“This is the biggest challenge we have had so far,” Taylor said. “We could use creativity and our imagination. We had an open slate to do pretty much anything.”

Taylor said she chose this particular friend because she had a “lot of hair to do something with,” as well as Meek being a model on a part-time basis. Meek said she was excited to participate and help her friend out.

“It is always fun getting your hair done,” Meek said.

Students had the chance to win beauty supplies that could be used during their studies. A total of three winners were awarded in four different categories.
