OTTAWA — A Leipsic man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges that accuse him of pointing a revolver at a deputy on May 6.
Daniel Tijerina, 53, is charged with obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony; intimidation, a third-degree felony; aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor; grand theft, a third-degree felony; menacing by stalking, a fourth-degree felony; possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony; and stopping after an accident, a first-degree misdemeanor.
Sgt. Kevin Siefker from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to serve Tijerina with a summons from another criminal case, according to Putnam County Prosecutor Gary Lammers. The summons was for failing to stop after an accident.
Siefker identified himself as a deputy from the Sheriff’s Office and Tijerina opened the door with a revolver pointed at Siefker. Siefker moved back, pulled his weapon and started giving Tijerina commands to put down the revolver, Lammers said. After a brief standoff, Tijerina put down the weapon, Lammers said.
Siefker served the summons and left Tijerina at his home. The next day Siefker returned to arrest Tijerina, Lammers said. Lammers did not have information available on why Tijerina was not arrested immediately after the incident.
Deputies searched Tijerina’s home the day after the incident and found a stolen firearm, Lammers said.
Judge Randall Basinger ordered Tijerina’s bail set at $35,000 with conditions that he continue residing at his address of 930 S. Belmore St., Leipsic, not consume alcohol or drugs, not be present at places that serve alcohol, appear at all scheduled hearings, not possess firearms, have no contact with Nicole Kelly, and wear a secure continuous remote alcohol monitor. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. July 15.
The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of more than eight years.
Tijerina also appeared in Putnam County Municipal Court earlier Monday on a charge of hit/skip with injuries, a first-degree misdemeanor.
In addition, Basinger granted a domestic violence civil protection order against Tijerina on June 5 with provisions that he possess no deadly weapons and turn in his concealed handgun license.
