SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Nutrien Lima Nitrogen will halt production for 60 days as the ammonia nitrogen plant undertakes a routine turnaround project that will bring some 800 workers to Lima and result in $100 million-worth of upgrades at the facility.
Work is already underway to prepare for the turnaround, scheduled to begin on Aug. 30, during which the nitrogen plant’s pipes will be turned off and replaced.
The turnaround is nothing out of the ordinary, as such projects are planned every four to five years, according to Russ Decker, a special projects manager for Nutrien Lima who spoke to the Lima Rotary Club on Monday.
About $50 million will be used for turnaround maintenance, Decker said, while the remaining $50 million will be used toward upgrades and expansions at the facility.
Nutrien Lima, which was coming off a record year for ammonia production in 2019, had another record-breaking month in April.
The company is bringing some 800 workers from around the U.S. to complete the project, Decker said, which will increase traffic outside the plant.
Residents may also hear whistling and hissing as the ammonia pipes are turned off, Decker said, but the sounds should subside within the first few days.
The turnaround is expected to be complete by late October.
